Amtrak's Thruway bus service between Green Bay and Milwaukee to end Oct. 1

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Amtrak's Thruway bus service between Green Bay and Milwaukee will be discontinued as of Oct. 1, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), as a contract was unable to be renewed.
The Amtrak I-41 Thruway bus service has operated two roundtrips between Green Bay and Milwaukee daily since 2019.
In a press release, WisDOT said, "the legislature did not provide adequate resources through the 2025-27 biennial budget to keep the bus service operational."
The department says Governor Evers requested more than $15 million in funding for passenger rail expansion and existing operations in his state budget proposal, but the Legislature did not approve any new funding.
They say operational costs are rising due to equipment and maintenance needs, along with inflation. Ticketing revenue has covered a portion of costs for the thruway service, while the state covered the remaining costs.
A list of alternative bus services across Wisconsin, including service between Green Bay and Milwaukee, can be found on WisDOT's website. You can find WisDOT's intercity bus route map here.
