Alderwoman Coggs looks to discuss standard operating procedures for those in police custody

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Alderwoman Milele Coggs is introducing a communication file to discuss standard operating procedures (SOPs) relating to individuals in police custody.

This is in response to the Feb. 23 incident in which 20-year-old Keishon Thomas passed away in a holding cell at the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 station.

“What happened at MPD District 5 in February was tragic, and we owe it to the victim’s family and the community to have a transparent conversation around SOPs related to the detention of individuals, what can potentially be improved or enhanced and other measures to ensure those in police custody are safe,” said Alderwoman Coggs.

Milwaukee police released redacted footage of the incident on Friday.

The file will be heard at a future meeting of the Common Council's Public Safety and Health Committee.
