Active Streets program seeks proposals for 2023
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The city of Milwaukee is seeking proposals for the next round of its Active Streets program.
The program started in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Department of Public Works chose streets in four areas of the city and limited or prohibited traffic with the goal of increasing safety for people looking to walk or bike at a safe distance from one another.
The program continued in 2021 and 2022, with community organizations proposing Active Street locations and incorporating art and semi-permanent traffic calming installations on chosen streets.
The city says this year, Active Streets will officially transition to a two-year program. Temporary traffic calming measures will be activated in the first year and semi-permanent or permanent traffic calming structures will be installed in the second year, according to a press release.
“We are seeking community-based organizations with a passion for bringing more health and vitality through neighborhood activity,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said. “And we are excited to again partner with neighborhood leaders to change the culture in how we view and use our streets.”
The city says selected organizations will receive up to $9,999 for each year of the two-year program.
2021-2022 Active Streets locations include:
- W. Washington Street from S. 20th St. to S. 1st St.
- W. Meinecke Avenue from N. 37th St. to N. 38th St.
- N. 25th St. from W. Roosevelt Drive to W. Capitol Drive
- W. Galena Street from N. 27th St. to N. 40th St.
Street eligibility must be verified with DPW by Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. Applications are due March 10, 2023.
