ACLU files lawsuit challenging Wisconsin gay marriage ban

MADISON -- The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit challenging Wisconsin's law banning same sex marriage, a law ratified after 60% of the voters supported the ban in 2006.

17 states now allow same sex marriage, but under Wisconsin's evasion law couples who leave and get married can be fined and sent to prison.

Same-sex marriage supporters say Wisconsin's domestic partnership law that allows limited benefits doesn't go far enough, and is facing a legal challenge of its own by gay marriage opponents.

Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says, \"This constitutional amendment was approved by a large majority of Wisconsin residents. I believe the amendment is constitutional, and I will vigorously defend it.\"
