AARP grant to fuel the revival of a Milwaukee garden 🌱
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The VIA Community Development Corporation has earned a "Small Dollar, Big Impact" grant from AARP Wisconsin for revitalizing a "story garden" in a southside Milwaukee neighborhood.
Established in 2016, the garden at the intersection of 29th and Burnham has reportedly been dormant due to transitions in the community.
Slated for improvements such as ADA accessible garden beds, maintenance materials and added lighting, the project aims to bring back the once vibrant community space.
The grant, provided monthly by AARP Wisconsin to various community-improving projects, has awarded $1,000 to this initiative with the funding paving the way for future garden activities to be led by the neighborhood. Enhanced lighting also aims safety for local bus stop users and residents.
Originating from a block leader's initiative in Burnham Park, the project fosters collaboration among local residents. Neighborhood walks organized by VIA in the area aim to deter nuisance activity and bolster community ties.
AARP Wisconsin's "Small Dollar, Big Impact" grant program, since its 2020 inception, has been offered support to both rural and urban projects across the state. More information can be found by clicking here.
