A teenage boy is in custody Thursday morning after police say he led officers on two high-speed chases overnight

(Mt. Pleasant)  Mt. Pleasant Police report the teenager stole a white, 2016 Dodge Journey pickup truck from his father’s girlfriend Wednesday night. Officers first tried to pull over the truck just after 11:30 p.m. near State Highway 20 and Meadow Lane Avenue. Officers said the truck did not have its headlights on when they first tried to attempt a stop.

Instead, MPPD said, the truck sped up. At points, officers reported the chase hitting speeds of more than 80 miles per hour. After 2.3 miles, officers determined to terminate the chase, citing public safety concerns. They were, however, able to get the license plate number, and put out an alert to local law enforcement.

At 2:45 a.m. Thursday, Mt. Pleasant police officers again spotted the truck, at STH 20 and Oakes Rd. The officers tried to pull the vehicle over but instead said the driver sped up, hitting speeds of 80 MPH. They decided again to end the chase in the name of public safety, but not before alerting the Sturtevant Police Department about the chase.

Officers with SVPD responded to a house near 90th St and Florence Dr, where the driver, a 13-year-old boy, was taken into custody.

The boy was taken to the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Operating a vehicle without Owner’s Consent, Fleeing/Eluding Police, Reckless Driving, Operating a motor vehicle without a license, and Failure to stop for stop light.
