Marquette wins overtime thriller as ranked teams stumble across Wisconsin

(CBS 58) — Week 2 of the Wisconsin high school football season continued Friday night with overtime drama, ranked matchups, major upsets and several dominant performances across the state.

CBS 58 began its coverage with Brookfield Central and Waukesha West, two teams coming off impressive Week 1 performances in which neither allowed a touchdown.

This time, it was Brookfield Central controlling the matchup. The Lancers defeated the Wolverines 42-14 to improve to 2-0, while Waukesha West fell to 1-1.

Racine Case entered Friday riding the momentum of a Week 1 victory over Franklin, but the Eagles faced a difficult test against No. 4-ranked Division 1 Hamilton.

The Chargers proved too much, defeating Case 52-32. Hamilton improved to 2-0, while Racine Case dropped to 1-1.

Kenosha Bradford and Marquette delivered one of the most dramatic finishes of the night.

The teams were tied 24-24 at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime. Bradford scored first to take a 30-24 lead but missed the extra point.

Marquette then faced fourth-and-1 and punched the ball into the end zone to tie the game. The Hilltoppers converted the ensuing extra point to complete a 31-30 victory over No. 7-ranked Division 1 Bradford.

Marquette improved to 1-1 after falling to top-ranked Arrowhead in Week 1, while Bradford dropped to 1-1.

The My24 Game of the Week featured a ranked Division 2 matchup between No. 7 Grafton and No. 10 Slinger.

Grafton bounced back from its Week 1 loss to Mount Horeb/Barneveld with a 36-24 victory over the Owls. Both teams are now 1-1.

Several other ranked teams were tested Friday night, including No. 9-ranked Division 1 Verona, which traveled to Oconomowoc.

The Raccoons made a statement with a 30-14 victory over the Wildcats. Oconomowoc improved to 2-0, while Verona fell to 1-1.

Top-ranked Division 1 Arrowhead continued its strong start to the season with a 35-7 road victory over Neenah. The Warhawks improved to 2-0.

No. 3 Division 1 Muskego also remained unbeaten with a dominant offensive performance against Oak Creek, defeating the Knights 63-23. Muskego improved to 2-0, while Oak Creek dropped to 0-2.

Division 5 produced one of the night's biggest ranked matchups as No. 2 Mayville traveled to No. 5 Lake Country Lutheran.

The Lightning pulled off the upset, edging the Cardinals 17-14. Lake Country Lutheran improved to 2-0, while Mayville fell to 1-1.

Another ranked team went down when Union Grove cruised past No. 4-ranked Division 3 Whitefish Bay 35-7. The Broncos improved to 2-0, while the Blue Dukes fell to 1-1.

Westosha Central also knocked off a ranked opponent, defeating No. 8 Division 3 Wisconsin Lutheran 21-6. Both teams moved to 1-1.

No. 2 Division 3 Pewaukee defended its home field against No. 9 Baldwin-Woodville, earning a 31-14 victory.

No. 6 Division 6 Lomira remained unbeaten with a 24-0 shutout victory over Milwaukee King. Lomira improved to 2-0, while King fell to 1-1.

Elsewhere in southeastern Wisconsin, Waukesha South improved to 2-0 after surviving a high-scoring battle with Greendale, 47-43. The Panthers dropped to 0-2.

Mukwonago earned its first victory of the season with a 35-28 win over Badger. Mukwonago improved to 1-1, while Badger fell to 0-2.

Menomonee Falls remained unbeaten by edging Beaver Dam 21-17. The Phoenix improved to 2-0, while Beaver Dam moved to 1-1.

Waterford picked up its first victory of the season with a 35-7 win over Wauwatosa West. Waterford improved to 1-1, while the Trojans fell to 0-2.

South Milwaukee also moved to 2-0 after winning a defensive battle against Kenosha Tremper, 12-7. Tremper dropped to 0-2.

Kenosha Indian Trail remained perfect with a narrow 24-23 victory over Middleton. The Hawks improved to 2-0, while Middleton fell to 0-2.

Kewaskum shut out Campbellsport 35-0, while New Berlin West's offense exploded in a 62-22 victory over Milwaukee Reagan. The Vikings improved to 1-1, while the Huskies fell to 0-2.

West Allis Central spoiled alumni night at Cudahy with a 33-7 victory. The Bulldogs improved to 2-0, while the Packers fell to 0-2.

Nicolet edged Waukesha North 28-21, while New Berlin Eisenhower improved to 2-0 with a 37-20 victory over Whitnall.

Franklin was looking to rebound from its Week 1 loss to Racine Case, while Waunakee was also searching for its first victory after falling to Muskego.

It was Waunakee that got back on track, defeating the Sabers 34-7. The Warriors improved to 1-1, while Franklin fell to 0-2.

Sun Prairie East delivered one of the largest offensive performances of the night, defeating Racine Horlick 67-8. Sun Prairie East improved to 1-1, while Horlick fell to 1-1.

With Week 2 now complete, several teams have established themselves as early contenders, while others will look to regroup and respond when Week 3 kicks off next week.
