MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- This Memorial Day weekend, Americans across the country are paying tribute to the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military.
Hundreds of people gathered at the War Memorial Center in Milwaukee for their annual Field of Flags event on Saturday, May 29.
They planted more than 7,000 flags to honor every brave United States service member who gave his or her life over the past several decades.
"I'm hopeful that everyone this weekend takes the time to really recognize the true meaning of the holiday and that is to commemorate those who went before us, fought for this country, gave their last full measure of this country, for our ability to enjoy the right to be an American.," Milwaukee County Sheriff Earnell Lucas said.
People are being asked to volunteer this coming Tuesday to help with the removal, cleaning, and storing of the flags.
