5th OWI results in crash into house, driver arrested

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office arrested a 51-year-old man after a short chase, starting when his driving on the freeway appeared erratic.

At 2:02 a.m., a sheriff's deputy tried to pull over an SUV on the westbound I-94 N. 35th offramp for a possible OWI.

The SUV kept going on N. 35th, ran a red light at Greenfield and continued onto Lincoln. The driver then tried to turn left on 26th but was going too fast and missed the turn. The car jumped the curb and hit the side of a house near 26th and Lincoln. The crash ruptured a gas meter attached to the house causing a leak, which was turned off by WE Energies.

The deputy, with the help of a Good Samaritan at the scene, arrested the driver, who was uncooperative. During this process the deputy saw that the driver was slurring his words and smelled of alcohol.

The driver, who has been convicted four times in the past for OWI, was booked on charges of Fleeing/Eluding, and a fifth OWI.

The OWI charge is pending the results of further investigation.
