5 years since former Milwaukee officer fatally shot Sylville Smith

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Friday, Aug. 13, marks five years since a Milwaukee police officer shot and killed Sylville Smith, leading to unrest in the Sherman Park neighborhood.

Since then, Sylville's brother has focused on honoring him with events like an annual book bag drive.

He's also a lead organizer for Milwaukee's Peoples Revolution.

Part of the Sherman Park neighborhood has been rebuilt into Sherman Phoenix, an entrepreneurial hub for small, Black-owned businesses.

The Black officer who shot Sylville Smith, Dominique Heaggan-Brown, was acquitted in the shooting.
