$3M bail set for Grafton man accused of trying to kill wife after she filed for divorce
GRAFTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An ex-West Allis firefighter accused of trying to kill his wife had his first court hearing Thursday, Oct. 30.
Fifty-three-year-old Guy Paider was given $3 million cash bail for charges of attempted first degree intentional homicide and recklessly endangering safety in a case of domestic violence at his home in Grafton. Prosecutors say Paider's "significantly high amount of assets" contributed to the high bail.
The criminal complaint says Paider's daughter called 911 as he threw her mother to the ground, then carried her into the bedroom where he pulled a gun.
When officers arrived, they heard him shoot four times, hitting her in the abdomen, leg and groin. She was taken to Aurora and then flown to Froedtert Hospital in serious condition.
An online fundraiser identifies that woman as Shirley Aliaga. Court records show she had filed for divorce from Paider that day.
According to the fundraiser, she's making progress towards recovery.
Paider appeared in court virtually from jail Thursday, alongside his attorney.
Judge Steven Cain called the case "extremely disturbing."
"Court has substantial concerns for public safety, safety of witnesses or victims, as outlined - children, caregivers of children, and the like. So, substantial cash bail as it relates to ensuring his return to court and ensuring public safety is appropriate in this case," Judge Cain said.
Prosecutors say Paider did try to harm himself while at Ozaukee County Jail. He was taken to Winnebago Mental Health Institute where they say an evaluation found he had no underlying mental health conditions.
Paider was ordered no contact with Aliaga, their children, and the current caregiver for their children.
The case is being reassigned to a different judge. The next court date is not yet scheduled.
