(CNN) — At least seven people, including two police officers, were injured in a mass shooting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday, officials said.

The shooter was confirmed dead at the scene, two law enforcement officials told CNN.

Two officers were among those injured and are in stable condition, Hennepin County Medical Center told CNN affiliate KARE.

Seven patients were brought to a nearby hospital, the hospital told The Associated Press. Three of the injured were in surgery with gunshot wounds, KARE reported.

Police asked people to avoid the area of 15 East Grant Street.

Around 5:45 p.m. local time, dozens of police cars and officers surrounded the scene, as pedestrians continued walking through the area.

Though many officers, SWAT vehicles and EMS remained at the scene around 6:30 p.m. local time, authorities appeared to be maintaining a calm presence.

The surrounding area is home to an apartment complex, the Minneapolis Convention Center, hotels and a hospital.

Nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus issued a shelter-in-place order “out of an abundance of caution,” a spokesperson told CNN.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in a Facebook post his public safety team is responding to the shooting and state officials are on the ground.

“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” the governor said in a subsequent post. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”

Neighboring police agencies, as well as the Minnesota State Patrol, are “working closely” with the Minneapolis Police Department after the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a post on X.

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI are also responding to the shooting, the agencies said on X.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
