MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A Milwaukee high schooler is dead after an early morning shooting on the city's north side.

Milwaukee police say another 20-year-old person was injured.

According to family members, 17-year-old Donell Jones was shot at killed at a party near 23rd and Townsend just after 3:00 a.m. on Easter morning.

"Detectives knocked at my door, when they knocked at my door, I already knew it wasn't good," said the teen's mother, Tawanda Staten. "He wasn't one of those kids that was in the street, he just wanted to go to a party with his friends and hang out."

Staten was told her son was at a party when shots were fired, hitting him and one other person.

"One of his friends say that they were approached by some guys in a mask, trying to rob them," Staten explained.

Jones was pronounced dead at the hospital.

He was a senior and a football player at Milwaukee Lutheran High School, set to graduate next month.

He planned to study medicine at Northern Illinois University.

"It's going to be sad, because I can't go see him walk that stage," said Jones' aunt, Annette Staten.

Jones' family members call him respectful and smart.

They told CBS 58 he was working at Metro Market to save up for a car for college.

"He had goals, and I'm just sorry he's gone," said his great aunt, Lena Adams.

His mother says she feels defeated by constant gun violence.

"We can talk all day about putting the guns down, but the guns are here to stay, and they're in the wrong hands of people," Staten said.

Milwaukee police say they're looking for an unknown suspect.

"Even if they don't catch him, God knows who he is. God's gonna take care of him," Staten said. "We can say 'justice' all day long. It ain't gonna bring my child back."

Jones’ family plans to hold a candlelight vigil near 23rd and Townsend on Monday, April 21 at 4 p.m.
