31-year-old suspect seriously injured after crash and shootout with Brookfield police

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Brookfield police say a 31-year-old is seriously injured and hospitalized after getting in a shootout with officers on Sat. Jan. 31. 

Officials say they responded to a vehicle crash on Barker Road, north of North Avenue, at around 10:31 p.m.

After searching the area for reports that the individual involved in the crash fled the scene, the suspect fired at officers.

A City of Brookfield police officer returned fire, and the suspect was hit by gunfire. 

Crews then transported the suspect to the hospital, where he is being treated for serious and potentially life-threatening injuries. 

No officers were struck by gunfire. Police say one officer received minor injuries while responding.

The involved officer is 24 years old, with 3 years of law enforcement experience. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. 

Brookfield police say the preliminary investigation "indicates officers performed their duties courageously, professionally and within the confines of the law and department expectations."

The Milwaukee Police Department is the lead agency in this investigation.
