Racine & Me: Inside Sunflower Thrift and Estate Sale Services
RACINE, WI (CBS 58) -- A new thrift shop on the corner of 5th and Wisconsin is redefining secondhand shopping—blending community, comfort, and care into every corner of the space.
Sunflower Thrift and Estate Sale Services is a family-owned, donation-based shop run by Avianna Taylor and her family—Desmond, Amelia, Jeremiah, and their cat Hoona. As an active-duty military family, they wanted to create a space rooted in service, sustainability, and connection.
Inside the shop, guests will find a wide range of items, from high-end pieces and vintage finds to antiques and everyday essentials priced at just a few dollars. All clothing is washed and ready for a new home, and furniture is carefully cleaned and upholstered by hand—a process Avianna says she takes pride in taking her time with.
The layout is intentional and inviting. Designed to feel like home, Sunflower Thrift creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere rather than a traditional resale store. Guests are encouraged to linger, browse, and enjoy a small coffee bar available while they shop.
Families are especially welcome. A dedicated kids’ corner allows children to watch a movie, color, and do arts and crafts—often alongside Avianna’s own children—giving parents time to shop while kids enjoy what she calls “the playdate you didn’t have to plan.”
Sunflower Thrift and Estate Sale Services also hosts estate sales and offers a rotating schedule of events. Once a month, shoppers can take part in a popular $15 Fill-A-Bag event, with details posted on social media. The space is also available for private events, including shopping parties, birthday celebrations, and fundraisers.
Giving back is central to the mission. The shop hosts donation drives twice a year, with event details shared online.
The business is housed in a historic building believed to have been built in 1891, adding another layer of character to a space already filled with stories, memories, and second chances.
