Woman seriously injured in Sunday morning crash; driver facing 3rd OWI

WATERFORD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Waterford woman is being treated for life-threatening injuries she received in a two-vehicle accident in Racine County early Sunday morning. Police say she was the passenger in a car driven by 37-year-old Ryan Kamps of East Troy. Kamps is facing his third offense Operating While Intoxicated.

According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, the 36-year-old woman was not responsive when first responders arrived on the scene of the accident at State Highway 20 near Racine County Road U in the Town of Yorkville. She was taken to Froedtert Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Kamps was also taken to Froedtert, but his injuries are believed to be minor.

The accident happened around 12:40 a.m. Sunday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle driven by Kamps veered into the path of a Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by a 36-year-old man from Kenosha. He was not injured in the crash.

Several witnesses told investigators that they saw Kamps drinking and attempted to keep him from driving. They said Kamps refused assistance and drove away from a local establishment prior to the accident. Deputies later arrested Kamps for Operating While Intoxicated Causing Injury and Felony Causing Injury by Intoxicated Use of a Motor Vehicle. When he is released from the hospital, Kamps will be transported to the Racine County Jail.
