Woman recalls granddaughter's second-floor escape from arson fire on Milwaukee's south side

Diana Falcon

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- We're learning more about a harrowing escape from an arson fire last Friday on Milwaukee's south side

Diana Falcon says her daughter and granddaughter were on the second floor of the burning apartment building near Loomis and Fardale Avenue. Falcon says her daughter, who's recovering from serious injuries, made a difficult and possibly lifesaving choice, pushing her 9-year-old daughter out of the window, not knowing whether anyone was on the ground to help.

"She's pushing her daughter out the second floor. So, when you think about it- and pushing her to safety- and at this point, it's safer to throw her from the second story on the ground than for her to burn alive," Falcon said. "So that's traumatizing on its own. But thank God that that neighbor woke up and left outside."

Diana Falcon says that neighbor saw what was happening and reached the scene in time to catch the young girl.

Five people were hurt in the fire.

Forty-three-year-old Keith Luko faces eight felony charges in connection, including arson and endangering safety.

According to the criminal complaint, Luko admitted to setting the fire because he was angry his neighbors were smoking marijuana.
