MOUNT PLEASANT, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Mount Pleasant woman is dead after a two-car crash Sunday in Racine County.
She was 32 years old.
Christopher Schmaling, Racine County’s sheriff, says nine others were hurt and “several” of them are now “fighting for their lives.”
Schmaling says unsafe driving conditions due to the weather caused a driver to lose control and cross the center line on Highway 20.
The vehicle collided with another vehicle coming the other way near 63rd Drive.
“The road conditions were such that it was treacherous,” Schmaling said. “I was out in that weather myself. I can vouch for it. The road conditions were slippery. Visibility was poor.”
Before officers arrived on scene, some people including Jennifer Rettammel stopped and got out of their cars to help.
“I almost just stood in the street and just cried,” she said. “You don’t know what to do or how to help other than just be there, offer support, give somebody a hug.”
Schmaling says it doesn’t appear that excessive speed or alcohol are factors in the crash.
