Woman charged in Milwaukee apartment building fire convicted of arson twice prior

MCSO

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Charges have been filed in connection to the arson fire at a Milwaukee apartment complex near 22nd and Hampton that sent multiple people to the hospital.

Forty-eight-year-old Laquita Spears faces three felonies, including arson of a building and two counts first degree recklessly endangering safety.

According to the criminal complaint, Spears used a cigarette lighter to start a fire in her father's apartment during an argument Jan. 13. Officers were told she left the unit, yelling, "burn, (expletive), burn."

Firefighters rescued multiple people from the building, with some seen hanging from windows on the second and third floor when first responders arrived. Multiple people were taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, and six units were deemed uninhabitable, according to prosecutors, resulting in Red Cross housing assistance for 15 residents.

When questioned by investigators, the complaint says Spears admitted to using a lighter to start clothing on fire on top of furniture in her dad's apartment.

This marks the third time Spears has been charged with arson, with previous convictions in Milwaukee County in 2015 and 2022.

She's set to appear in court Wednesday, Jan. 21.
