Details announced for the 10th annual Mayor’s Masked Ball fundraiser
MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Tuesday, March 28, families in Milwaukee County celebrated their babies turning one.
It’s a birthday some parents considered to be a milestone, as the infant mortality rate in Wisconsin surpasses the national average.
The babies were celebrated with cupcakes and presents, all sponsored by the program Blanket of Love.
The program was founded in 2004 by Julia Means and is part of Ascension Wisconsin.
Data from Ascension shows approximately 100 babies die every year in Milwaukee before their first birthday.
Means said she knew pre-natal and post-natal education had to lead the way to combat what some are calling an epidemic.
"They were just thirsty for information and they wanted their babies to survive," said Means.
Beyond education, the program helps moms get key items like diapers, transportation, and formula.
But Means said more work needs to be done throughout the state.
"We need finances to make sure that our babies are born healthy and that they not just survive, but thrive," said Means.
