Wisconsin roads ranked 5th worst in US

WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin has the fifth worst roads in the entire country, according to a recent study on The Best and Worst Roads in the U.S. from ConsumerAffairs.

The study was determined by analyzing data from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and other government agencies, as well as surveying residents throughout the nation.

The study found the five states with the worst roads are:

1. Hawaii
2. Rhode Island
3. Louisiana
4. California
5. Wisconsin
6. Mississippi
7. Arkansas
8. Colorado
9. South Carolina
10. Iowa

Wisconsin received a C on the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) most recent infrastructure Report Card, the study says. ASCE says the state's roughest index is about 170 inches per mile (in poor condition and hard on vehicles) for about 29% of its urban roads.

According to the ASCE, more than one-third of Wisconsin’s roads are in “fair or below condition,” and this is likely to get worse over the next decade.

The study says these conditions mean drivers in Wisconsin spend an average of $733 each per year due to excessive wear and tear on their vehicles.

The states with the five best roads, according to the study, are New Hampshire, Minnesota, Vermont, Alabama, and Idaho.
