Wisconsin DNR urges caution for ATV riders during holiday weekend 🏍️

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is advising all-terrain vehicle operators to exercise caution and adhere to safety protocols during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

This call for vigilance follows a report of 14 fatalities in ATV-related accidents so far in 2023.

Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator, commented on the advice during a Thursday, June 29 press release. He emphasized the importance of safety measures, especially as the holiday weekends typically see increased traffic on trails and roads.

Holsclaw recommended that operators maintain a safe speed, wear helmets and seat belts and avoid alcohol while operating ATVs.

Operators are encouraged to familiarize themselves with state laws and can find a list of approved safety education classes on the DNR Safety Education webpage.
