West Allis father wants federal investigation into son's death

Milwaukee -- The U.S attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin released the following statement Saturday in connection with a possible federal investigation into the death of 16-year-old Corey Stingley:

\"By his letter of September 27, 2013, to the Attorney General of the United States, Mr. Craig Stingley provided information about the death of his son, Corey Stingley, on December 29, 2012, and asked for the involvement of the United States Department of Justice in response to it.

By its responsive letter of December 16, 2013, the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice advised Mr. Stingley as follows:

“The Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice is responsible for investigating and prosecuting criminal conduct involving deprivations of rights. In general, these matters include acts involving racial or religious violence, misconduct by local and federal law enforcement officials, violation of peonage and involuntary servitude statues, and violence against reproductive health care facilities.

The information you provided regarding these incidents [involving the death of Corey Stingley] is insufficient for us to determine the existence of possible federal criminal civil rights violations. We will consider the matter further if you provide additional information concerning the circumstances involved in these incidents.”

The letter further provided Mr. Stingley with direction on the nature and the content of the additional information, if any, that he may choose to provide, along with identification of the office of the United States Department of Justice to which he should send his information.

To date, the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice and the Office of the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin have not received from Mr. Stingley any additional information about matters related to the death of his son.

Even so, the United States Department of Justice will review this matter to determine if a federal investigation is warranted, without any present commitment to or plan for prosecution. In that connection, Milwaukee County District Attorney John T. Chisholm has reconfirmed his intention to support, assist, and cooperate fully in any federal review of this matter.
