'We will be ready': Dozens get certified as Protest Marshals if ICE comes to Milwaukee
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As fears of Immigration and Customs Enforcement coming to Milwaukee grows, the Milwaukee Area Labor Council's Immigrant Rights Committee and 'ICE out of Milwaukee Coalition' hosted a Protest Marshal Training to help encourage peaceful protests.
The Committee is hosting Protest Marshal Training to keep people safe while they make their voices heard.
"It's a safety function, it's a traffic control function, it's potentially a de-escalation function. We are preparing in case there's more need for large actions in the Milwaukee area that we will be ready so people can exercise their first amendment right and stay safe," Pam Fendt, Milwaukee Area Labor Council President explained.
On Sunday, a dozen people sat in on a two-hour training, learning how to keep people in line, stop traffic if needed and tactics for de-escalation and keeping people clam when emotions are high.
Protest marshals are the people donned in yellow vests; you can find often them at parades and marches.
In preparation for ICE potentially coming to Milwaukee, Fendt says they want to be ready.
"Clearly people want to help I think just as we have seen in Minnesota where the community has been 'not my neighbor, what is going on is not fair or just.' It's our rights as Americans to speak our views to our government," said Fendt.
Fendt says in just three weeks about a 100 people have become certified protest marshals.
