We Energies flagger struck by hit-and-run driver in Racine County, severely injured

RACINE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a We Energies flagger was injured in a hit-and-run. 

It happened Tuesday, March 21 on S. Honey Lake Road, near Spring Prairie Road, in the town of Burlington. 

The sheriff's office says after striking the flagger, the driver backed up and fled northbound on S. Honey Lake Road. 

The We Energies employee, identified by the company as a woman, was transported by Flight for Life to a hospital with serious injuries. 

The vehicle was described by witnesses as a four-door white Chevrolet, diesel, with black rims and tinted windows. The vehicle is possibly a late 2000's model. 

Officials say broken parts from the vehicle were found on scene consistent with black molding.

Meantime, We Energies released the following statement: 

"We encourage anyone with information about the driver or this incident to contact the Racine County Sheriff’s Office right away. The injured flagger is a contractor working on behalf of We Energies. Our thoughts are with her and her family. This avoidable incident is a stark reminder to slow down around construction crews."
