WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wauwatosa community held its annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 27, to honor fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day, which is about more than the unofficial start of summer, commemorates those who died in war while serving the country. Although several towns claim to have originated the holiday, Congress credits Waterloo, N.Y.

The ceremony at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, the future site of the Veterans Memorial, featured a guest speaker, a presentation by the mayor, as well as a moment of silence. The Wauwatosa Veterans Memorial Committee was present to discuss the project.

David Cefalu of the Wauwatosa Veterans Memorial Committee said, "It’s a great central location for the city. It’s at Hart Park here so it’ll be a great space to be used for all the ceremonies and future remembrances here at the memorial."

The Wauwatosa Civic Celebration Committee is seeking funding from various agencies and citizens to support the project. Construction will begin once sufficient funding is secured.
