Wausau umbrella display returns in honor of Ukraine

WAUSAU, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Dozens of yellow and blue umbrellas are on display in the city of Wausau in honor of Ukraine.

Each year, hundreds of umbrellas form the colorful canopy above 3rd Street in downtown Wausau.

The umbrella display has become a popular spot for residents and tourists to visit and take photos.

According to greaterwausau.org, the umbrellas -- inspired by Compass Properties' Mark Craig -- first debuted in 2015 as a unique way to highlight the revitalized downtown Wausau area.

In 2020, the umbrellas were white and blue in the shape of a mask to pay tribute to health care and frontline works during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the canopy of umbrellas were bright pink, yellow and blue.
