Waukesha Sheriff: Man arrested for 5th OWI after fleeing from deputy, crashing into utility pole

WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A suspect has been arrested after police say he fled from deputies at a high rate of speed before crashing into a We Energies utility pole.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a deputy attempted to stop the suspect after noticing that he was driving recklessly and swerving between lanes at 97 mph on westbound I-94, east of Springdale Road.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. on June 23.

As the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly accelerated, nearly striking barrier walls, crossing all three traffic lanes, driving on the grass and median, deviating from his lane, and nearly hitting two other vehicles before exiting onto westbound Highway 16.

The deputy pursued the suspect who exited Highway 16 at Ryan Road and continued toward Sussex. The suspect then left the roadway and crashed into a We Energies utility pole.

As a result of the pursuit, a squad car was damaged along with a telephone box, road signs, and the suspect's vehicle.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and later arrested. He faces charges for OWI 5th Offense, Eluding an Officer, and Resisting/Obstructing an Officer.
