Walmart announces closure of Timmerman Plaza store

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Walmart has confirmed plans to close the Timmerman Plaza store located at 10330 W. Silver Spring Drive.

In a press release, a spokesperson said the store has not performed as well as hoped and is slated to close by Friday, March 10.

The release says Walmart is hopeful that the store's associates will transfer to another nearby location.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr. released the following statement:

"The sudden announcement today by Walmart that it will close its store at 10330 W. Silver Spring Dr. is terrible news for the northwest side and for the greater community.
It’s infuriating that such a massive, resource-rich, and wealthy Fortune 100 enterprise like Walmart cannot keep such an important location open. The move not only negatively impacts shoppers, pharmacy customers and store workers, but I fear it will only add to the food desert issues that we are seeing in that area.
Studies show that kids and families who don’t have regular access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and other foods with higher nutritional value can suffer negative impacts, such as obesity and diabetes.
I have already begun working with the Department of City Development to identify possible replacement options (stores and other business/development candidates) that are worthy of the 10330 W. Silver Spring location.
I promise that I will be working diligently to find a way to keep that site viable and productive for the residents of the area."

Walmart released the following statement:

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our W. Silver Spring Drive location. We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities and on walmart.com.”
