Volunteers needed for Serve Your City, Saturday, August 8th at Clarke Square Park in Milwaukee

Serve Your City was started four years ago as a way to bring neighbors closer together on Milwaukee's South Side.

\"It's a way to meet those who live in your neighborhood, get to know what's going on,\" organizer Richard Schwoegler tells CBS 58 News.

He says the event is vital given the current circumstances with a disturbing spike in gun violence.

\"People are fearful to go outside and we need to get together, to get out and do something for your community.\"

Serve Your City is looking for volunteers to meet Saturday August 8th at 8:30 a.m. at Clarke Square Park for a clean up between Scott and Mineral Streets.

Everyone who volunteers is then invited back for a block party with entertainment and snacks at Clarke Square Park.

Special this year, 1,000 backpacks will be distributed to school students.
