UW-Whitewater wins third DIII baseball title

EASTLAKE, Ohio (CBS 58) - University of Whitewater baseball is back on top of the Division III baseball world.

The Warhawks defeated Messiah University 21-5 to claim its first national championship in over 10 years.

UW-Whitewater bounces back after finishing as a national runner-up last season to Misericordia.

"Coming up short, it did - it did sting quite a bit," said Aaron Holland, sophomore catcher. "But it kinda shows what kind of team we have that we were able to come back, get to the same spot and ultimately win it. "

"What I feel right now I can't describe with words. I'm over - I don't know. I feel so happy so glad that we were able to do it. as a senior it's a great way to go out," said Darryl Jackson, senior infielder.

This is the Warhawks third national title in school history after winning in 2005 and 2014.

UW-Whitewater head coach John Vodenlich has been there for every one of the Warhawks titles and said this year felt so similar to the school's first title in '05.

"I've just been watching this thing unfold and it's been a privilege and an honor."

UW-Whitewater(49-6) earns the title after winning the Best-of-3 series with an 18-3 win over Messiah on Tuesday, June 3.

The Warhawks go through NCAA World Series play, 5-0, outscoring opponents 56-12 in the final three games of the season and 74-19 during each game in Ohio.

"The only thing you hope for is for them to reach their goals, whatever those goals are and so for me to sit back and watch these team reach those goals I'm fulfilled right now," said Vodenlich "It's really been a surreal experience and this is a really special team and I'm so happy for them."
