Two saved, one person perishes in overnight fire in Racine

RACINE, Wis (CBS 58) -- Racine Fire Department is reporting that two people were saved and one person died in a fire that took place at around 4:00 a.m. at 1833 Woodland Ave. in Racine.

According to officials, smoke alarms alerted two of the three people sleeping in the single-story house, and one person, a 74-year-old man was found inside the house alive but unresponsive.

Per a release, despite paramedics using advanced life support interventions on the unresponsive man, he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

In a statement, RFD said a husband-and-wife couple in their seventies were outside when firefighters arrived and that the man is presently in stable condition and expected to be discharged later today. Officials say the woman was being transported to the Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Regional Burn Center in Milwaukee as a precaution to receive specialized care for smoke inhalation sustained at the scene.

According to RFD, this fire is not the result of foul play. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

"Despite the tragic loss of one life at a house fire this morning, two lives were saved as smoke alarms sounded just before 4 AM to alert the husband and wife on the first floor of the fire in their home that started in the basement," said Captain Craig Ford.

Racine Fire Department reminds everyone to test their smoke alarms regularly.
