Transit of Mercury

Get out your telescopes!

Today, Mercury passes directly between Earth and the sun. The inky-black form of the innermost planet will glide across the solar disk for more than 7 hours beginning around 7:15 am EDT.

If you don't have a telescope, you can tune into the Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus, Georgia, for a live webcast of this rare event. Also, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory will transmit images from space throughout the day.

If you do have your own equipment, be sure to use proper filters to keep from damaging your eyes. You can find more information on safe methods here.
