'They save lives': MFD surprises residents with free smoke detectors and pizza
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- When you think of fire safety, pizza isn't typically the first thing that comes to mind.
However, in honor of Fire Prevention Week, the Milwaukee Fire Department partnered up with Domino's Pizza to serve up more than just a meal.
"If the family or the person that placed the order has working smoke alarms, their order is free," said Lt. Carlos Velazquez-Sanchez, with the Milwaukee Fire Department. "If they do not have working smoke alarms but allow us to put working smoke alarms in the home, the order is free."
The Milwaukee Fire Department assembled a team Monday night, tagging along for deliveries and making sure each family is safe and prepared with a working smoke detector.
"Smoke alarms are like our nose," said Lt. Velazquez-Sanchez. "They are working 24 hours a day, seven days week, and when they smell that smoke, when they sense that smoke, they can give you enough time to get out of the house safely."
Adam Labban was one of many who received a visit. He says he's been meaning to replace his for a while and thanks to the surprise visit and installation, he can rest easier.
"This honestly could not have been more perfect timing," said Labban. "I think ours has like been going out for the last month or so, and so definitely a perk there, too."
Lt. Velazquez-Sanchez says in a fire, every second counts, which means every family should be prepared.
"At least in the city of Milwaukee, we have fires almost daily," said Lt. Velazquez-Sanchez. "From the burnt toast in the toaster, to the big fires like the one we just had a few hours ago."
If you live in the city of Milwaukee and need a smoke detector, you can call the city's Smoke Alarm Hotline at 414-286-8980 to have a free one installed.
