MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Gallons of frosting and dozens of cakes were no match for some of Wisconsin's best decorators.

These competitors are focused, putting their piping tools to their canvas of choice. Kroger employees from across the state competed for the title of best cake decorator at this year’s Great Cake-Off.

“It’s an outlet, definitely, for somebody that likes the arts,” said cake decorator Angie Scheel.

Out of 45 submissions, 14 decorators from across Wisconsin were selected to show off their skills.

“Absolutely amazing. We saw a lot of old school decorating, a lot of new school decorating, lots of different styles and techniques. and it's just really cool to see how everybody’s minds work and how they’re able to put it together,” said last year’s winner, Dani Zielski.

Decorators had two hours to pipe their creations onto a half sheet cake, round cake, and two cupcakes. Afterwards, competitors faced the judges, including Zielski and celebrity guest judge LeRoy Butler.

“When you have stuff like this, presentation is everything,” said Packers Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler. “Had a young lady, early 20s. We also had a young lady who was here for 44 years. And they kinda learn from each other.”

Judges looked for creativity, design, and different techniques, something Scheel excelled at.

“It was unexpected. It was unexpected,” she said.

Scheel will represent Wisconsin at the competition’s national round in Cincinnati later this year, in hopes that her skills will take the cake.

“Figure new things out on how I can be one with the buttercream,” said Scheel. “Hard work and somebody noticed it and now it feels good.”
