Sturgeon Spearing Begins Saturday

Sturgeon spearing season begins this Saturday.

Thousands of anglers are expected to gather on Lake Winnebago and few upriver lakes for this annual tradition.

This week's cold snap has helped to thicken the ice cover.

Right now there's about 16 to 20 inches of ice on the big lake.

Still rescue crews will be out in force in the event of an emergency.

The water clarity is good.

You can see down between five and fourteen feet making it easier spearers to see and harvest the giant prehistoric fish.
