MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- An education specialist offered advice Thursday, May 8 for families looking to better support their children’s academic development, including how to respond to challenges such as mental math, writing habits and executive functioning.
Judy Cohen of Lakeside Educational Services joined the conversation with tips like using math fact charts, drawing lines to guide handwriting and practicing structured learning activities during the summer.
She mentioned that mental math can be difficult for students who struggle with memory and recommended flexibility in problem-solving methods.
Cohen also addressed common issues such as overuse of filler words in writing and the importance of supporting children with executive functioning difficulties.
For those unsure about summer school, she encouraged either working with teachers for at-home materials or seeking professional tutoring services.
