'Step up:' Activist hands out free whistles as tensions over ICE rise across country
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Communities around the country are protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a federal agent shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
As our neighbors in the north continue to protest against ICE, people here in Milwaukee are on edge.
"Minnesota is not that far away how can we make sure we are prepared. With everything in the news with ICE we have no idea if things are going to escalate here in Milwaukee," said Julio Guerrero, community activist.
As customers came for groceries at El Rey on 35th and Burnham, they left with a whistle and an instructional kit on what to do if they see or encounter ICE agents.
"The big thing is nonviolence so wanting the folks in the community if they encounter ICE that they are doing so in a way that's safe," said Guerrero.
Guerrero says it's a safe way to alert people around you.
"What I've seen in Minnesota is people use whistles in their neighborhood groups to use the whistles and say hey ICE has come into their neighborhood, that lets everyone know ICE is in the area," Guerrero explained.
Guerrero handed out 200 kits and says while he rather be watching football, he wants his community to be ready.
"If there's ever a time to get involved again or to get engaged, we need ordinary people to step up," said Guerrero.
Guerrero says he is partnering with one local alderwoman who he says donated to the cause.
CBS 58 has reached to her office for confirmation, and we are waiting to hear back.
