Six-year-old Milwaukee boy killed in fatal vehicle crash

MILWAUKEE -- A six-year-old Corey Stevenson Jr. was killed after being hit by a vehicle while crossing North Ave. near 40th St. around 7:00 a.m. 

His mother, Janada Barr, was distraught early this morning. 

She told CBS 58's Matt Doyle her son was the middle of three children.

\"It's going to be so hard just not waking up and seeing my son,\" Barr said, fighting off tears. \"It's going to hurt me so bad. I'm trying to be strong for my other two kids.  He's leaving behind a two-year-old sister and a 7-year-old oldest brother.  It's hurting my son so bad.\"

Police say the boy was hit after exiting an alley and trying to cross the street midblock. The 58-year-old Milwaukee woman who hit the boy was driving a 2007 Infinity M35. Police say the woman remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Stevenson was a student at Milwaukee's Clarke Street School.

Police say it appears early in the investigation the child was struck as a result of darting into traffic.

At this time, the driver will not be given any kind of citations.

The case is still under investigation, and it will be reviewed by the district attorney.

Milwaukee Public Schools released the following statement:

\"Milwaukee Public Schools expresses our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, friends, classmates and staff of the kindergarten student killed this morning. The district is providing support services to students and staff at the school and offering assistance to the family.\"
