Simplicity over complexity: Fitness trainers share their tips for hitting the gym in 2026

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Whether you're looking to level up at the gym in 2026 or you're joining for the first time, it can be a lot of pressure in January.

"Simplicity over complexity," said Brandon Goelz, a personal trainer at Life Time in Brookfield. "Keep it as simple as possible, that way you'll enjoy what you're doing and you're not going to become overwhelmed, and inevitably you'll get to that goal."

Goelz says try to avoid focusing on weight loss as the goal.

"Pick a performance goal such as, I want to do pull-ups, I want to do pain-free push-ups, etc. Other things, as you improve on them, your body, by default, will change, probably for the better," said Goelz.

He says most people don't cite motivation as their biggest obstacle. Instead, it's all about time.

"The main objection that I hear is, 'it doesn't fit my schedule.' Say I work 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Let's just say I have kids as well and they're in sports after school. How can I fit in my own health? It has to be a priority," said Goelz.

Trainers at Life Time can help with focus, form and even nutrition.
