Shopping cart ordinance passes, retailers face fines if carts need to be returned

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Milwaukee aldermen approved a proposal Tuesday designed to reduce the hazards and blight of unattended shopping carts.

If after the city is forced to return two abandoned carts back to the store, retailers would have to install an anti-theft system or face a fine of $500-$1,000 on carts found off of store property.

The ordinance passed with a vote of 11-4.
