Sheriff: Distracted Driver from Oak Creek Rear-ends Law Enforcement Officer on Highway 19

(CHANNEL 3000) A distracted truck driver from Oak Creek rear-ended a law enforcement officer on Highway 19 Monday afternoon, Dane County officials said.

Dane County dispatch got a call reporting a crash outside the Dane County Law Enforcement Training Center around 1:40 p.m.

A Ford Explorer in the eastbound lane was making a left hand turn into the training center when a truck driver rear-ended the SUV, deputies said. The truck driver was reportedly distracted and reaching for coffee.

Deputies at the scene said the driver of the Ford suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Dane County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Elise Schaffer said the driver of the Ford is a law enforcement officer. She said the officer was not with Dane County, but she didn’t know the agency the officer was with.

The officer was not driving a law enforcement vehicle, Shaffer said.

Deputies said the truck driver will be cited for inattentive driving.

Highway 19 was closed in both directions for about an hour, according to Department of Transportation alerts.
