Senator Tammy Baldwin announces 2024 reelection bid
MADISON Wis. (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin announced she will be running for reelection in 2024.
Baldwin, 61, is seeking a third six-year term in the U.S Senate. With a closely divided Senate, even minor changes could play a role in the fight for the majority.
The Democrat from Madison said she's seeking another term to make sure Wisconsinites "have a fighter on their side."
“I'm committed to making sure that working people, not just the big corporations and ultra-wealthy, have a fighter on their side," Baldwin said in a statement. "With so much at stake, from families struggling with rising costs to a ban on reproductive freedom, Wisconsinites need someone who can fight and win."
During her 2018 reelection bid, Baldwin was supposed to be considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents, but she showed a strong performance defeating her Republican opponent Leah Vukmir by 11-points.
In 2012, Baldwin became the first openly gay Senator and recently received national attention for her efforts to pass legislation requiring the federal government to recognize same-sex marriage. The bill was signed into law by President Joe Biden in December.
No one has officially announced a challenge to Baldwin, but Republican businessman Eric Hovde is considering a second run for U.S. Senate after deciding to not run for governor in 2022.
Some Republicans have also suggested Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI 8th District) take on the incumbent Democrat. Former Milwaukee Sheriff David Clark, a controversial figure who has embraced election conspiracy theories and is a prominent supporter of former President Donald Trump, may also consider a run.
