Semi carrying batteries starts on fire, prompts full closure of I-43 at Good Hope Road

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Several agencies are responding to a hazmat situation causing a full freeway closure in both directions on I-43 at Good Hope Road Tuesday night, Dec. 16.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, a semi carrying lead acid batteries started on fire.

North Shore Fire says the fire has been extinguished, and hazmat crews have determined the truck's contents need to be offloaded by a cleanup contractor.

They say the sheriff's office will soon reopen I-43 NB; however, the southbound lanes will remain closed for an unknown amount of time.

Meanwhile, traffic is being diverted off the freeway at Silver Spring northbound and Brown Deer Road southbound.

No injuries have been reported.

This is a developing story. Stick with CBS 58 for updates.
