Sauk County officials working round the clock to solve Devil's Lake State Park murder

SAUK COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Upwards of 80 tips have led to very few answers in Sauk County. Detectives there are trying to figure out who killed a 24-year-old Wauwatosa man at Devil's Lake State Park and why.

It's been more than a week since John Schmutzer was found near the Grottos Trail at Devil's Lake State Park on Wednesday, Oct. 14. He was killed in broad daylight.

Since Oct. 14, the Sauk County Sheriff's Office has been working around the clock to find the person responsible with about eight to ten detectives working on the case daily. But they'll have their work cut out for them as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says there's no cameras at the south shore entrance near where Schmutzer was found. In addition, no one was working the entrance booth that morning.

"I've worked a lot of challenging cases in 30 years of law enforcement, this is challenging," said Lt. Chris Zunker, Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

"If they were on the south shore of Devil's Lake in the morning of last Wednesday, and think they saw something that might be relevant to this case or investigation, if they know our victim and have any information that may be relevant to the investigation, we would love to hear from those folks."

Anyone with information is asked to call Sauk County Crime Stoppers at 1-888-847-7285.
