CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police arrested a staff member at Riverside University High School over the alleged abuse of an 18-year-old student with intellectual and physical disabilities.
MPD says the 39-year-old paraprofessional hit the student on Nov. 12; medical attention was not needed for the student.
In a letter sent to parents last week, MPS said:
"Dear Riverside Families and Staff,
We value you as a member of the Riverside University High School community, and we want to keep you informed.
Today, we received a report of a staff member allegedly slapping a student. As with any such case, we are investigating thoroughly and taking appropriate action. We also contacted the Milwaukee Police Department, which is conducting a criminal investigation. The individual is not currently working in the school.
We understand that this situation might have been upsetting to students or staff who may have been nearby. If your student needs assistance after this event, please contact the school office to be connected to the school counselor, nurse, psychologist, or social worker. School staff may access the Employee Assistance Program to learn about available options.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support as we continue to make Riverside a safe place for all of us. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at (414) 906-4900."
