Reports of shots fired outside University Hospital in Madison; suspect in custody

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A suspect is in custody after a shots fired incident outside University Hospital Emergency Department Tuesday, March 31.

The University of Wisconsin's campus alert system tweeted campus police were responding to reports of gunfire just before 11:30 a.m.

According to the UW-Madison Police Department, two officers with the City of Fitchburg Police Department were transporting a subject into the Emergency Department for evaluation and treatment. When the subject was being moved to another area in the ED waiting room, he attempted to disarm one of the police officers. During the struggle, one round was fired into the ceiling of the waiting room.

The officers quickly regained control of the subject and he was taken into custody. No one was injured.

At the time of the report, UWPD immediately sent a WiscAlert emergency notification to warn the community about the incident, asking people nearby to shelter in place. A follow-up WiscAlert was sent a short time later with an all-clear message.
