RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo has four new residents joining their family! Teak, Baobab, Cedar and Acacia are the zoo's newest Meerkats consisting of three brothers and their sister.

They arrived at the zoo early this summer and after settling into their new home and passing their quarantine time, they are now on exhibit for their one-year birthday Thursday, Aug. 21!

Zoo goers can visit them at Meerkat Manor right next to the African Penguins at the center of the zoo.

"We are so excited that Racine Zoo is able to bring back such a popular and charismatic species for zoo visitors," stated Racine Zoo's Curator of Animal Care Dan Powell in a press release.

Born at Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wis. the two zoos worked together to receive a recommendation to move the Meerkats to the Racine Zoo from the AZA's Meerkat Species Survival Plan this spring.

The program allows AZA zoos to work together to maximize the genetic diversity and long-term sustainability of various threatened or endangered species. Once the group was old enough, they made the trip from Madison to Racine.

Facts about Meerkats: They are a small mongoose native to Southern Africa. They live in communal groups and work together to find food, defense and monitor threats.

Since they can live in groups to up to 30 individuals, Meerkats have a complex social structure and hierarchy to determine which member completes which task. They are often led by female members or breeding pairs. They are primarily insectivorous, meaning they eat beetles or other insects found in their environment.
