Racine teen charged with fatal shooting near 12th and Center

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 17-year-old has now been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Racine.

Deshawn Ellison is charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide and Possession of a Firearm by Adjudicated Delinquent.

Officers were called to the area of 12th and Center around 8 p.m. on May 22 for a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive man on the ground near a home. Despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at the hospital that evening.

The victim was identified as Jose Angel Padilla.

Officers spoke with a witness who said he was at a home with his friend and the victim. According to the criminal complaint, the victim and the witness were leaving to get change when two unknown males wearing hoodies over their heads shot at the victim. One of the suspects allegedly stated "Oh yeah" before opening fire.

The suspects then allegedly fled the scene.

A Crime Stoppers tip came in saying that Deshawn Ellis shot the "boy."

Officers made contact with Ellison at Case High School and took him into custody.

Ellison allegedly told police that he and "J" shot the victim as part of a robbery attempt. He later changed his story to say it was in retaliation for a previous robbery that the victim had committed against "J."

A second suspect has also been arrested but CBS 58 isn't naming him until he's been formally charged.

Ellison will have his preliminary hearing on June 5.
