Racine PD: Suspect accused of participating in dozens of illegal straw firearms purchases

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A suspect is in custody, accused of making dozens of illegal straw firearms purchases. 

A straw purchase, as defined by the ATF, involves someone who purchases a gun for someone who is prohibited by law from possessing one or for someone who does not want their name associated with the transaction.

According to the Racine Police Department, after a months-long investigation, a search warrant was executed in Racine on Tuesday, July 11.

Police say firearms related to the investigation have been identified as being used in numerous shootings including at least one homicide.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Racine County jail.
